Decadal changes in the basin-wide heat budget of the mid-latitude North Pacific Ocean

چکیده

Abstract Research has indicated that the meridional heat transport (MHT) in North Pacific Ocean (NP) across 24°N increased 1980s and 1990s, resulting different distributions: ocean content (OHC) 1980s, while net surface release was strengthened 1990s; however, reasons for these differences remained unclear. The authors revisited investigation of budget NP mainly using hydrographic observations to understand why distribution between 2 decades extend analysis 2010s. OHC upper 700 m north east 137°E exhibited sharp increases around 1990 as well 2010s, it nearly stable between. northward retreat subarctic gyre boundary coincided with spin-up subtropical late thereby allowing warm anomaly from subtropics propagate northeastward. Meanwhile, concurrent weakening wintertime westerlies resulted suppression loss western NP. In contrast, southward shift front suppressed rise, despite MHT increase 1990s. unprecedented warming occurred eastern estimation based on indicates must have been since did not increase; latest atmospheric reanalysis datasets failed reproduce this.

Mid‐2000s North Atlantic shift: Heat budget and circulation changes

Prior to the 2000s, the North Atlantic was the basin showing the greatest warming. However, since the mid-2000s during the so-called global warming hiatus, large amounts of heat were transferred in this basin from upper to deeper levels while the dominance in terms of atmospheric heat capture moved into the Indo-Pacific. Here we show that a large transformation of modal waters in the eastern No...

Direct observations of basin-wide acidification of the North Pacific Ocean

[1] Global ocean acidification is a prominent, inexorable change associated with rising levels of atmospheric CO2. Here we present the first basin-wide direct observations of recently declining pH, along with estimates of anthropogenic and non-anthropogenic contributions to that signal. Along 152 W in the North Pacific Ocean (22–56 N), pH changes between 1991 and 2006 were essentially zero belo...

Decadal atmosphere-ocean variations in the Pacific

Considerable evidence has emerged of a substantial decade-long change in the north Pacific atmosphere and ocean lasting from about 1976 to 1988. Observed significant changes in the atmospheric circulation throughout the troposphere revealed a deeper and eastward shifted Aleutian low pressure system in the winter half year which advected warmer and moister air along the west coast of North Ameri...

Central Pacific El Niño and decadal climate change in the North Pacific Ocean

Decadal fluctuations of the ocean and atmosphere over the North Pacific Ocean significantly affect the weather and climate of North America and Eurasia. They also cause transitions between different states of marine ecosystems across the Pacific Ocean1–3. An important fraction of North Pacific low-frequency variability is linked to the North Pacific Gyre Oscillation4, a climate pattern associat...

Decadal trends of the upper ocean salinity in the tropical Indo-Pacific since mid-1990s

A contrasting trend pattern of sea surface salinity (SSS) between the western tropical Pacific (WTP) and the southeastern tropical Indian Ocean (SETIO) is observed during 2004-2013, with significant salinity increase in the WTP and freshening in the SETIO. In this study, we show that increased precipitation around the Maritime Continent (MC), decreased precipitation in the western-central tropi...
